The Women NGO Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) has expressed deep concern over the overdue deadlock in the House of Representatives, which has lasted for over a month.
This prolonged internal conflict hinders the legislative processes and delays essential decisions crucial to the progress and welfare of the Liberian people.
One such critical issue is the pending public health bill, which has the potential to significantly improve access to healthcare, particularly for women and girls.
WONGOSOL calls on all members of the House to prioritize national development and move past their differences.
The organization urges lawmakers to engage in constructive dialogue and reach a consensus for the greater good of the country.
In a statement issued on Thursday, November 14, 2024, WONGOSOL reminded the lawmakers that their duty is to the Liberian people, and they must act with transparency, respect for the rule of law, and a commitment to advancing national progress.
As representatives of Liberia’s 73 districts, the House members are bound by the Constitution, which empowers them to act in the interest of the citizens who elected them.
WONGOSOL emphasized that the Liberians expect their representatives to demonstrate integrity, accountability, and patriotism in their decision-making.
The organization stressed that the House should create an environment of collaboration, ensuring that the voices of all citizens are heard and respected.
The group also highlighted the urgent need to address pressing national issues such as the rising cases of drug abuse, gender-based violence, and the accessibility of healthcare and education.
These matters require immediate legislative action, and WONGOSOL warned that the ongoing impasse is already causing significant disruption, potentially threatening Liberia’s peace and development.
Liberia faces a range of economic, social, and infrastructural challenges. WONGOSOL called for an end to the standoff and urged the Legislature to prioritize laws, policies, and budgets vital for national development.
The organization appealed to lawmakers to set aside personal or factional interests and embrace a spirit of patriotism to serve the Liberian people’s needs.
As the nation strives for progress, WONGOSOL stressed that the people of Liberia deserve a government that works in their best interest. The legislature must urgently and seriously fulfill its responsibilities.
