Sources who spoke to Verity News said the incident occurred during routine operations at the iron ore loading plant. The worker, identified as Mr. James Kukeh, reportedly fell from the loading structure while on duty, leaving him unconscious.
Mr. Kukeh, an employee of Complete Human Resource Solution (CHRES), a local contractor working with China Union’s lead contracting company, Bangli, is among several Liberian workers assigned to load iron ore onto trains at the site.
Following the incident, the unconscious worker was transported from the mining site to Bong Mines Hospital. Witnesses claim he was carried on a motorbike despite the presence of company vehicles at the facility, a detail that has sparked criticism among fellow workers.
As of press time, Mr. Kukeh remains hospitalized, and his condition has not been officially disclosed.
The incident has intensified concerns among workers, who say they have repeatedly raised issues about workplace safety and emergency response but have seen little improvement. Some workers, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of losing their jobs, expressed frustration and despair over what they describe as ongoing neglect.
“Should China Union kill all of us before the government steps in?” one worker said emotionally. “We want to speak out, but we are afraid. We could lose our jobs, and our families would be vulnerable.”
China Union management has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
This latest development adds to mounting concerns over worker welfare in Liberia’s mining sector, particularly in concession areas where labor conditions have often come under scrutiny.
