As World Breastfeeding Week kicks off globally under the theme “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,” Liberia’s Ministry of Health is calling for stronger national efforts to promote and protect breastfeeding.
Despite ongoing public health initiatives, malnutrition remains a pressing challenge in Liberia. According to the 2019–2020 Liberia Demographic and Health Survey, 30 percent of children fewer than five are stunted ~ an indicator of chronic malnutrition.
“Breastfeeding is not just a maternal duty; it is a shared national responsibility,” the Ministry said in a press release, urging collective action from families, health workers, employers, and policymakers.
The Ministry is advocating for exclusive breastfeeding during a child’s first six months, followed by continued breastfeeding alongside appropriate complementary feeding for up to two years and beyond.
Health experts emphasize that breastmilk contains all the essential nutrients ~ along with 88 percent water ` ~ required for infants under six months. It strengthens immunity, protects against childhood illnesses, improves maternal health, fosters emotional bonding, and offers an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective feeding method.
To strengthen breastfeeding support systems, the Ministry outlined several priority actions:
Public education on the benefits of breastfeeding
Active involvement of fathers and extended families
Creation of breastfeeding-friendly workplaces
Promotion of safe milk expression and storage techniques
Finalization and enforcement of the National Code on Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes
“Let us all work together to give every Liberian child the best start in life,” the Ministry urged.
World Breastfeeding Week runs from August 1–7 and serves as a global reminder that supporting breastfeeding is an investment in national health and development.
