Youth and Sports Ministry Launches National Cadet Program in Cestos City

Cestos City, Rivercess County – The Ministry of Youth and Sports on November 24, 2025, officially launched the National Cadet Program in Cestos City, marking a major step toward empowering young people across Liberia through leadership, service, and community development.

Speaking at the launch, the Acting Deputy Minister F. Alphonso Y. Belleh, II described the initiative as “a significant milestone” for Liberia’s future, emphasizing that the program is designed to prepare young citizens for nation-building through structured service and skills training.

“We come together in the spirit of community and workforce development,” he said. “The essence of every great society lies in empowering its young people. You represent hope for our nation’s future.”

Deputy Minister Belleh encouraged cadets to embrace values such as service, leadership, resilience, and integrity. He stressed that the National Cadet Program is not just a government initiative but a collective partnership involving communities and local institutions.

“Leadership is about giving of yourself,” he said. “As you participate in this program, remember that your journey is about contributing to the greater national good.”

Rivercess County Superintendent Byron W. Zahnwea praised the program as an important investment in Liberia’s future leaders. He noted that the country has long referred to youth as “future leaders,” but emphasized that such terminology must be backed by empowerment and opportunities.

“If we say young people are the future leaders, then we must build the foundation that enables them to lead,” he stated. “This program gives our youth the tools to become the leaders Liberia needs.”

Superintendent Zahnwea thanked the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the national government for selecting Rivercess as the host county for the launch, saying the initiative will significantly strengthen youth development in the county.

Also speaking was Rivercess District #2 Representative and Chair of the House Committee on Youth and Sports, Hon. Steve Tequah, who described the launch as both historic and motivating for the county’s young people.

“This is the biggest gift any young person can receive,” he said. “You have been chosen as the first group in Liberia to participate. Take it seriously and commit yourselves fully.”

Rep. Tequah urged youths across Rivercess to register with the Youth Coordinator’s Office so they can benefit from future opportunities, including scholarships, training programs, and other youth-development initiatives. He reassured them of his support during his tenure in leadership.

“For the next six years, you have no worries,” he said. “Use this opportunity to empower yourselves. I work for the Liberian people, and anything good coming from this government must reach you.”

Speaking on behalf of students, Green Pasture School System President Grace Togar expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided by the program.

“We are thankful for this initiative,” she said. “It makes us proud, and we are ready to learn and grow together.”

The National Cadet Program aims to build a future generation of disciplined, skilled, and community-centered young leaders who will contribute to national growth through service, training, and civic engagement.
