Zelensky calls for ‘energy ceasefire’ – what it means

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for an “energy ceasefire” with Russia, proposing a halt to all strikes on infrastructure, particularly for the Easter holidays.

Ukraine reportedly struck a chemical plant in Russia’s Samara oblast, while a Russian strike on Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine, killed three people, including a 13-year-old boy.

Russia launched its most brutal attack on Ukraine since the war began, deploying nearly 1,000 drones and missiles over 24 hours, hitting 11 regions and seven cities.

Zelensky indicated that allies have signalled for Ukraine to reduce long-range strikes on Russia’s oil sector due to soaring global energy prices, exacerbated by the conflict in the Middle East.

Britain has condemned Russia’s expulsion of a British diplomat over alleged economic espionage, calling Moscow’s accusations “completely unacceptable”.
