GBARNGA, Bong County – The Managing Director of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), Mohammed M. Sherif, has announced that approximately 381,000 residents of Bong and Lofa counties are expected to benefit from a major rural electrification project designed to expand access to electricity and spur economic growth.
Sherif made the disclosure during the dedication ceremony of the 81-kilometer Gbarnga–Salayea Road, describing the initiative as part of the Boakai administration’s broader agenda to increase electricity access across Liberia.
According to Sherif, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has directed the Liberia Electricity Corporation to intensify efforts toward achieving 75 percent national electricity access before the end of his administration.
He revealed that a Saudi firm has committed US$9 million to the project, while the remaining estimated US$140 million is expected to be secured through support from Liberia’s international development partners.
Sherif further disclosed that the project’s feasibility study has been completed and is awaiting formal acceptance, a key step toward mobilizing additional financing and commencing implementation.
He commended Liberia’s development partners for their continued support of the country’s infrastructure agenda, noting that the electrification project, alongside the newly commissioned Gbarnga–Salayea Road, will create an important economic corridor that will improve livelihoods, enhance business opportunities, and stimulate economic activities in Bong and Lofa counties.
The LEC Managing Director reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to working with the government and its partners to provide reliable electricity to communities across the two counties.
