Commissioner Amara M. Kamara has lauded the management of Energicity for commissioning a 28.6 kwh combined capacity mini-grid in Totoquelleh and Farwhenta communities in Gbarpolu County, respectively. More than 500 homes, clinics and schools are expected to benefit from the project.
Commissioner Kamara described the project as a significant step forward in the Government of Liberia shared mission to electrify rural Liberia and empower communities through sustainable energy solutions.
Speaking at the ceremony on February 5 in Totoquelleh Gbarpolu County, Commissioner Kamara pinpointed that project symbolizes hope, progress, and the transformative power of solar energy noting that for too long, rural communities like Totoquelleh and Farwhenta have faced the challenges of energy poverty, which limits opportunities for education, healthcare, and economic growth.
“This mini-grid will light up homes and energize schools, health centers, and businesses. It will enable children to study after sunset, improve healthcare delivery, and create opportunities for local entrepreneurs to thrive. By harnessing the sun’s power, we are addressing energy needs and contributing to environmental sustainability and climate resilience”, he averred.
He continued: “The success of this project is a testament to the power of collaboration. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our development partners here, private sector investors, and the Government of Liberia, for their unwavering support and commitment to our singular quest for energy sovereignty. We like to note here that your investment in Liberia’s energy sector is an investment in the future of our people and the generations after us”.
Commissioner Kamara reaffirmed LERC’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for renewable energy projects. The Commission will continue to work with stakeholders to expand access to electricity, particularly in rural and underserved areas, and to promote policies and regulations that support sustainable development.
Cutting the ribbon to the project, the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners Hon. Claude J. Katta stakeholders and jubilant residents that the commissioning represents the dawn of a new era for Totoquelleh and Farwhenta—an era where darkness gives way to light, where opportunities replace limitations, and where the promise of a brighter future becomes a tangible reality. “This achievement is a testament to what is possible when vision, collaboration, and determination converged”.
Hon. Katta urged residents of Totoquelleh and Farwhenta to seize the opportunity to use electricity to educate their children, grow their businesses, and build a brighter future for their communities.
The Ministry of Mines and Energy representatives attended the commissioning ceremony, the Rural Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) Executive Director, Mr. Sam Nagbe, Ms. Nicole Poindexter, Energicity CEO, local government and county officials, among others.
Energicity Liberia is an active mini-grid developer and operator with 71 mini-grids across Sierra Leone, Ghana, and Benin. In 2024, LERC issued a Large Composite Micro Utility License to Energicity Liberia Corporation to Generate and Distribute Electricity in Gbarpolu County.
Energicity Liberia is expected to electrify eight additional communities, including: Bopolu City, Henry Town, Gbana, Zuo, Yagaryah, Takpoima, Smith Camp and Wesua.
