President Joseph Nyuma Boakai addressed the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Summit, urging African nations to push for justice and reparations for the lasting effects of slavery, colonialism, and systemic discrimination.
President Boakai emphasized Liberia’s deep connection to the issue during his speech, highlighting its founding by formerly enslaved people. He stressed that seeking reparations is about acknowledging past injustices and securing a more equitable future for people of African descent. He reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to advocating for fairness and reconciliation across the continent.
The Liberian leader praised the AU’s role in promoting peace and stability, particularly during Liberia’s recent elections. He commended Angolan President João Lourenço for his election as Chairperson of the AU and acknowledged the contributions of outgoing AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.
President Boakai also used the platform to outline Liberia’s national priorities under his administration’s ARREST Agenda, which focuses on economic development, infrastructure, governance, and education. He underscored the importance of African nations working together to achieve sustainable development and regional stability.
Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2026-2027 was another key point in his address. He welcomed the AU’s endorsement and called for continued support, emphasizing that Liberia is ready to contribute meaningfully to global peace and security.
President Boakai assured the summit that Liberia remains committed to the collective aspirations of the African continent. He vowed to strengthen partnerships within the AU and collaborate on initiatives that promote growth, justice, and unity.
