Deputy Central Bank Governor Euphemia Swen-Monmia earns US$14,000 a month plus an extra US$15,000 in housing allowance in the World’s 8th poorest country

“I have been acting since August 12, 2026. My monthly salary is US$9,000. Besides the salary, I also receive cash benefits of around US$5,000. My housing allowance should be around US$15,000.” Mrs. Euphemia G.T. Swen-Monmia, Acting Deputy Governor for Economic Policy, Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), at Confirmation Hearing

The country faces a stark imbalance amid massive youth unemployment, increased hardship, and widened income inequality. While Madam Swen-Monmia earns US$14,000 in salary and cash benefits, excluding an extra US$15,000 in housing benefits, tens of thousands of civil servants are still earning a non-living wage of US$150.

It will take a civil servant 7 years and 10 months to earn what Madam Swen-Monmia earns in one (1) month in just salary and cash benefits alone.

This is a developing story.
