Weah Slams LNP Apology

Former Liberian President George Weah has criticized the Liberia National Police (LNP) for what he describes as an “unwarranted” and “harbouring” apology over the conduct of officers during a recent political rally. The controversy stems from the presence of armed police officers at the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) rally in Dallas, which was organized to mobilize party supporters. The deployment, aimed at providing VIP protection, drew backlash from critics, including some members of the public and political figures. In response, the LNP issued a public apology, stating that the presence of officers was standard protocol for ensuring the safety of former presidents and other dignitaries.

The police further clarified that their personnel are expected to focus on duties such as crowd control, traffic regulation, and maintaining public order. However, the former president’s office rejected the apology, branding it as both unsolicited and suggestive of political motives. “We wish to stress that no complaint was made to the LNP concerning the conduct of security officers at the event,” the statement read. “Therefore, we view the LNP’s apology as unnecessary and potentially reflective of hidden political intentions.”The statement further asserted that all security officers assigned to former President Weah acted with professionalism during what was described as a peaceful and orderly gathering.

It also expressed concern over the LNP’s reliance on unverified social media reports instead of directly consulting the former president’s office.Reiterating its stance, the former president’s office urged the LNP and other state security agencies to maintain their neutrality and uphold professional standards.

“While the former President continues to respect the rule of law, he will not accept covert or inappropriate tactics by state institutions aimed at intimidation,” the statement added. The office concluded by emphasizing that all armed personnel attached to the former president’s security detail are officially sanctioned by the state.
