President Boakai Cautions Liberians Against Mob Violence

In a strong and unwavering appeal to the Liberian people, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has called on all citizens to uphold the rule of law and refrain from engaging in mob violence, a growing concern across the country.Speaking at the official launch of the Ministry of Justice’s National Anti-Mob Violence Campaign in Saye Town, Sinkor, President Boakai urged Liberians—particularly the youth—to place trust in the country’s justice system rather than resorting to vigilante justice.“

Mob violence has no place in a civilized society. The rule of law is the most powerful weapon we have to secure justice, stability, and development,” the President declared during his remarks. “This campaign marks a renewed effort by my government to address not just the symptoms but also the root causes of violence—including youth unemployment and limited access to justice.”

The campaign, launched on Saturday, April 19, 2025, is a joint initiative between the Ministry of Justice and development partners including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). It aims to curb the rising tide of mob justice incidents by increasing legal awareness, promoting peaceful conflict resolution, and restoring public confidence in state institutions.

Over the past year, Liberia has seen a disturbing rise in incidents where angry mobs have taken justice into their own hands—often in response to delayed legal proceedings or a perceived lack of action by law enforcement. The campaign seeks to tackle these frustrations directly through education, community engagement, and institutional reform.

Justice Minister and Attorney General Cllr. Oswald Tweh expressed appreciation for President Boakai’s firm support, emphasizing that the campaign will be rolled out nationwide.“We are determined to change the narrative,” Cllr. Tweh said. “Justice must not only be done—it must be seen to be done, in every community, for every Liberian.”

The Ministry of Justice has been actively pushing for reforms under President Boakai’s administration, including improved citizen-police relations, expanded access to justice in rural and underserved areas, and targeted programs to reduce youth vulnerability to crime and violence.Saturday’s launch drew a large crowd, including community leaders, civil society representatives, government officials, and members of the Diplomatic Corps—highlighting broad national and international support for the initiative.

As Liberia takes this critical step toward promoting peace and lawful justice, President Boakai’s message was clear: real change starts with trust in the system, respect for human rights, and a collective commitment to ending violence.“Let us walk together on the path of peace, unity, and the rule of law,” he concluded.
