Totota Fire Victims Plan Peaceful Protest, Demand Accountability of Relief Donations

Victims of the tragic Totota tanker explosion are set to stage a peaceful protest on Saturday, May 17, calling for greater transparency and accountability from the Disaster Management Committee overseeing relief efforts.

The protest, organized by the Victims Welfare and Grievance Committee, seeks to spotlight what survivors describe as unfulfilled promises by the committee, chaired by Mr. Tornola Varpilah. The group claims that despite significant donations made in the wake of the disaster, many victims continue to suffer without adequate medical care or support.

Speaking on a local radio station in Gbarnga on Thursday, spokesperson Alieu Konneh expressed frustration over the committee’s failure to deliver a comprehensive report on the use of donations and aid packages.

“Some victims who were discharged from health facilities are now in worsening condition. They urgently need proper medical care and support to rebuild their lives,” Konneh said. He added that several survivors are now forced to beg for food, lacking follow-up treatment or assistance.

Konneh also alleged political interference in the composition of the Local Disaster Management Committee, claiming it is dominated by supporters of the ruling Unity Party.

In light of these concerns, the committee plans to mobilize victims and community members for the upcoming protest, aimed at drawing the attention of the national government, civil society, and international development partners.

“We have spoken out repeatedly, but nothing has changed. This peaceful protest is a new step toward demanding justice and accountability,” Konneh stated. He hinted that if authorities remain unresponsive, the group may consider further action.

As of press time, Mr. Tornola Varpilah had not responded to the allegations. Efforts to obtain his comments continue.
