MONROVIA— University of Liberia (UL) President Layli Maparyan has called on faculty and staff to immediately end their work stoppage, announcing that the university is expected to reopen on August 25, 2026.
In a statement Monday, Dr. Maparyan acknowledged longstanding grievances raised by faculty and staff, including salary disparities, unpaid NASSCORP contributions, transportation challenges, the new Human Resources Manual and deteriorating campus infrastructure.
She said the UL Administration, NASSCORP and the Ministry of Finance have reached an agreement on outstanding social security obligations, with the government agreeing to pay the amount owed. NASSCORP will subsequently begin enrolling eligible UL retirees for pensions.
On salaries, Maparyan said the administration has confirmed disparities and plans to address affected employees through the FY2027 budget.
She also announced that new 62-seater buses are being procured for students, faculty and staff, while $2.2 million is allocated for a new 25-classroom building at Fendall Campus and another $4.1 million for upgrades at other UL facilities.
The UL President said the Board of Trustees has directed that the university reopen on August 25, stressing that students should not continue bearing the consequences of labor disputes.
She urged ULFA and ULSA to return to work while continuing dialogue on outstanding concerns.
