Snowe Alarms Death Threats, Blames Government for ‘Malicious Allegation’

Capitol Hill, Monrovia– Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe has sounded a chilling alarm over death threats he claims have emerged following what he describes as a “malicious” and “dangerous” allegation from the Government of Liberia.

The Senator is holding the government responsible for any harm that may come to him or his family.

“My life is in the hands of the state,” Snowe said during a passionate address on the Senate floor. “If I die today, the government will be held responsible because of the statement issued by the Ministry of Information.”

The controversy stems from a May 24th press statement issued by the Ministry of Information, Culture Affairs and Tourism, which accused Senator Snowe of making inflammatory and destabilizing remarks while on an official ECOWAS assignment in Sweden.

The statement further alleged that the senator was using his international influence to undermine the Boakai administration- an accusation Snowe says is tantamount to treason.

Snowe, a member of the ECOWAS Parliament and a prominent opposition figure, categorically denied the accusations, calling them unfounded and politically motivated.

Since the release of the government’s statement, Snowe claims he and his family have received multiple threats, prompting the need for security protection. “The threats have affected my 90-year-old mother. Her blood pressure has risen significantly. My family even hid the news from her at first to avoid distress,” he said.

In a formal communication titled “Complaint of Malicious Allegations Issued by the Government of the Republic of Liberia,” Snowe asked the Senate to publicly release the findings of any investigation to clear his name of the treason allegation, and demand a retraction and formal apologyfrom the Ministry of Information.
