plans for a major protest in Monrovia on Monday, June 9, demanding the release of four detained lawmakers, including former House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.
Speaking shortly after his temporary release from police custody on Friday, CDC National Chairman Atty. Janga Kowo called on all CDC partisans, opposition political parties, and solidarity allies to assemble at the party’s headquarters Monday morning. The group will then march to the Monrovia City Court in what the CDC is calling a “Mass Solidarity March.”
The protest is being organized in response to the arrest and detention of Koffa and three other lawmakers, who are currently facing serious charges including arson, criminal conspiracy, criminal facilitation, and attempted murder. The five were held overnight at the Liberia National Police headquarters before four being transferred to the Monrovia Central Prison, commonly known as “South Beach.”
“The time has come to stand in defense of our leaders and our democracy,” Kowo said, urging mass participation in what he described as a peaceful march for justice.
The case has already sparked public controversy, with supporters of the accused calling the charges politically motivated. Authorities have yet to issue any public statement on the ongoing investigation or respond to the CDC’s protest announcement.
Police are expected to increase their presence in central Monrovia on Monday in anticipation of the march.
