Liberia has officially ratified the Biodiversity beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Treaty, becoming a regional leader in protecting the world’s high seas.
The treaty aims to conserve marine biodiversity through Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and international cooperation.
EPA Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo’s advocacy at the UN General Assembly in September 2024 played a key role in Liberia’s ratification.
He emphasized the ocean’s importance to Liberia’s economy, food security, and climate resilience.
Benefits for Liberia
The ratification will enhance Liberia’s:
1. Global ocean negotiations presence
2. Access to marine science and technology
3. Opportunities for funding and capacity building
4. Ability to combat illegal fishing and manage marine resources sustainably
Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung will lead a delegation to the Third UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, to deposit the ratification instrument.
The delegation includes key officials from environmental, fisheries, and maritime agencies.
The BBNJ Treaty is a crucial step toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life below Water.
Liberia’s ratification demonstrates its commitment to protecting the ocean and its resources for future generations.
