Capitol Hill, Monrovia – June 23, 2025: In a major development, the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), in collaboration with the National Identification Registry (NIR), has announced a temporary suspension on the mandatory use of the National Identification Card as a requirement for banking transactions across the country.
According to a joint directive issued today, all commercial banks have been instructed to relax the enforcement of the National ID card as a pre-requisite for conducting transactions. The move is expected to ease access to banking services for many Liberians who are yet to obtain their national ID cards.
The directive further mandates all public social service providers to take note and comply accordingly.
Meanwhile, the NIR has also announced an immediate suspension of the issuance of National Identification Cards, citing administrative reasons. No specific timeline has been given for the resumption of the enrollment process, but authorities assure the public that an official announcement will be made regarding the resumption of mass registration.
The temporary measures come amid ongoing concerns about access to essential services and the logistical challenges associated with mass ID enrollment.
