LDEA Nabs Two Suspects for Illegal Drug Activities in Bong County

Bong County, Liberia – The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Bong Detachment has reported the arrest of two individuals in Bong County in connection with the illegal possession and trafficking of narcotics. The couple, identified as Zarwu Kennedy and Princess Varnah, is currently in LDEA custody at the Gbarnga Central Station and is expected to face prosecution in the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court in Gbarnga within the next days.

The arrests followed a credible tip-off from concerned residents of St. John Town, who raised alarms regarding the couple’s alleged drug activities. Officer Siaffa Kollie addressed the media on Monday, revealing that the police acted swiftly after receiving information on Sunday. “When we entered the town, residents reported the couple and a Nigerian national to us. They urged us to take action, claiming their children were becoming involved in drug use. However, the Nigerian national fled upon learning of our arrival,” Officer Kollie stated.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officials conducted a thorough search of the couple’s home, discovering a variety of illicit substances including marijuana—locally referred to as “grass”—Kush, and cigarettes. The community, long plagued by drug-related issues, expressed relief at the police intervention, highlighting the need for stringent actions against drug dealers.

Officer Kollie lamented the recent trend of courts allowing suspected drug traffickers to post bond, which he believes significantly hampers the fight against drug crime in Liberia. He criticized the judicial system, stressing that the release of drug suspects under such circumstances undermines law enforcement efforts. “The court allowing these people to post bond is undermining the fight against drugs,” he remarked. “Drug suspects should not be released on bond.”

Many residents and local leaders in St. John Town shared their concerns regarding the situation, depicting the suspects as a threat to community safety. Following the police action, local leaders urgently requested that the suspects not be released, fearing possible retaliation and further risks to their families.

The couple, while admitting to the sale of marijuana and cigarettes, has denied any wrongdoing concerning Kush. They maintain that the police planted the Kush to strengthen their case against them. “We don’t sell all those drugs. The Kush was added by the police,” the suspects claimed during questioning.

The ongoing situation in Bong County highlights the broader challenge of drug trafficking and abuse in Liberia. Despite ongoing efforts by law enforcement to crack down on illegal activities, the systemic issues within the judicial process continue to pose significant barriers to effective enforcement and community safety.

As the investigation progresses and the suspects prepare for court proceedings, the community remains vigilant and hopeful for a judicial process that supports the fight against drug-related crimes. A collaborative effort between law enforcement and citizens will be crucial in tackling the pervasive issue of narcotics in Bong County and thus ensuring a safer environment for all residents.
