President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. on Wednesday, July 2, joined U.S. Ambassador Mark C. Toner and members of the diplomatic corps to mark the 249th Independence Day of the United States, highlighting the deep-rooted relationship between Liberia and the U.S. and calling for stronger economic cooperation going forward.
The celebratory event was held at the James E. Pierre Banquet Hall on Benson Street in Monrovia, where President Boakai delivered a keynote address emphasizing shared values of freedom, democracy, and opportunity ~ ideals he said continue to guide both nations.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Liberia, I extend warmest greetings and heartfelt congratulations to the Government and people of the United States,” the Liberian leader said. “This day is a celebration not only of American independence but also of values that inspire nations worldwide.”
Reflecting on the historical ties between the two nations, President Boakai recounted the founding of Liberia by freed African-Americans in the 19th century, noting that the connection has since matured into a partnership grounded in political, cultural, and diplomatic cooperation.
“The United States has remained a steadfast ally, supporting Liberia in its democratic journey, strengthening institutions, and standing with us during moments of national challenge,” he noted.
Turning to Liberia’s foreign policy, President Boakai said the country is embracing a new diplomatic direction centered on economic engagement. He stressed that diplomacy must go beyond politics to drive trade, investment, and inclusive growth.
The President applauded the United States for what he described as a recent “shift toward commercial diplomacy,” pointing out that this aligns with Liberia’s aspirations to become a hub for investment and innovation in West Africa.
“We aim to promote Liberia as a viable and attractive destination for investment, innovation, and sustainable development,” President Boakai declared, while encouraging increased collaboration between Liberian and American businesses and institutions.
He highlighted priority sectors for investment, including energy, infrastructure, agriculture, technology, and entrepreneurship, adding that a stronger Liberia–U.S. partnership could lead to mutual prosperity.
“Let us work together to create a future of mutual prosperity, where both our peoples can thrive,” the President urged in his concluding remarks.
President Boakai also expressed appreciation for the invitation to participate in the celebration, reaffirming Liberia’s enduring friendship with the United States and extending best wishes for continued peace, prosperity, and unity to the American people.
