SUP to Stage Protest on Capitol Hill, Monday

The Student Unification Party (SUP) has announced plans to stage a peaceful protest on Monday, September 15, at the University of Liberia’s Capitol Hill campus, calling for immediate reforms to address challenges faced by students and faculty.

In a statement issued Sunday, though its secretary General Odecious Mulbah said SUP urged students, sympathizers, and members of the public to join the demonstration, which it described as a defense of “social justice, academic freedom, and peace.”

Students Unification Party accused the Boakai administration of allegedly sponsoring individuals it labeled as “thugs” to pose as a student organization in an attempt to disrupt their action.

SUP insisted that its protest is protected under Article 17 of the Liberian Constitution, which guarantees the right to peaceful assembly, as well as under international conventions.

“We call on the media, civil society, and the international community to stand with us as we resist intimidation and defend the rights of the Liberian masses,” the release noted.

The Vanguard student party, which has long positioned itself as an activist voice at the University of Liberia, vowed to continue championing the rights of students despite what it termed “attempts at suppression.”

The planned protest comes amid ongoing tensions between student activists and university authorities, with disputes over governance, funding, and academic freedom continuing to dominate campus politics.
