Civil Society Group Condemns Government Delay in Prosecuting Deputy Minister Accused of Rape

By Archie Boan

A leading civil society organization, the Movement Against Rape and Gender-Based Violence, has sharply criticized the Government of Liberia for what it calls a deliberate delay in prosecuting Bryant McGill, Deputy Minister for Youth Development at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

McGill is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl, the daughter of the Deputy Chief of Security at the same ministry. Despite the seriousness of the allegation, the group says the accused deputy minister continues to walk around freely instead of being arrested, investigated, and dismissed from office.

Speaking at a press conference in Paynesville , the group’s leadership described the government’s handling of the case as an act of gross insensitivity to survivors of sexual abuse.

We will not sit by and watch this case swept under the carpet. Justice must be served for the child survivor. If the government fails to take action within the next 24 hours, we are prepared to bring five hundred women into the streets to demand accountability,” the group warned.

The Movement Against Rape and Gender-Based Violence is calling for McGill’s immediate suspension, arrest, and prosecution in line with Liberia’s rape laws.
