The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has issued a scathing response to recent remarks made by Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah, calling his comments on ANC Political Leader Alexander B. Cummings “reckless, baseless, and politically motivated.”
At a press conference held Wednesday, October 8, 2025, ANC, through its Secretary General Desmond Ujay Nimely condemned what it described as a “drunken outburst” by Minister Piah, who allegedly labeled Mr. Cummings as “dishonest.”
The party argued that Piah’s behavior is unbecoming of a public official and accused him of turning the Ministry of Information into a propaganda machine for the Unity Party-led government.
ANC Blasts Government for Misplaced Priorities
In a strongly worded statement, the ANC took aim at the Boakai administration for what it described as a failure to address Liberia’s pressing economic, healthcare, and drug crises. The party pointed to rising prices of basic commodities, stagnating salaries, and worsening living conditions across the country.
“The cost of living is unbearable, yet public officials are driving around in luxury vehicles worth up to US$90,000 while ordinary Liberians struggle to afford a single meal,” the statement read. “Is this a rescue mission or a ransacking mission?”
The ANC criticized the government for mismanaging the economy, noting that despite improvements in the exchange rate, consumer prices remain high, a sign, it argued, of deep-rooted inefficiencies and corruption.
Healthcare System in “Complete Collapse”
The opposition party also raised concerns over what it termed the “complete collapse” of Liberia’s healthcare sector. It said hospitals are short on essential drugs, medical supplies, and staff, while government officials continue to seek treatment abroad at the taxpayer’s expense.
“Pregnant women are being turned away from hospitals due to lack of beds and basic medicine,” the ANC stated. “This is a shameful reflection of a government that has lost moral and political direction.”
Drug Epidemic Ignored
Addressing the growing threat of narcotic drug use among Liberian youth, the ANC accused the Boakai administration of turning a blind eye. It highlighted the destructive rise in substances such as “Kush,” “Spike and Die,” and “Solar Panel” and claimed that no meaningful efforts have been made to combat the spread of these drugs or rehabilitate affected communities.
“Entire communities are being destroyed, yet the government remains silent while the youth are being enslaved by addiction,” the party warned.
Corruption and Governance in Question
The ANC also highlighted alleged corruption and poor governance within the current administration, referencing secretive public contracts and the government’s silence over serious allegations, including a rape case involving a senior official.
“They campaigned on promises of reform but now preside over an administration defined by hypocrisy and betrayal,” said the ANC, calling on the government to uphold integrity and transparency.
ANC Defends Cummings’ Integrity
Defending its leader, the ANC described Mr. Alexander B. Cummings as a man of “proven integrity” with a clean record in both the private and public sectors. It warned Minister Piah and Presidential Aide Daniel Sando that any future attacks against Mr. Cummings or the ANC would be met with “strong, fearless, and factual resistance.”
Call for Leadership Change
In conclusion, the ANC reiterated its commitment to advocating for the Liberian people and holding the government accountable. It called for better leadership, one that prioritizes service, integrity, and development.
“Liberia deserves better,” the party said. “Until this government begins to serve the people instead of it, we will continue to expose its lies, challenge its failures, and confront its dishonesty, boldly, publicly, and unapologetically.”
