Turkish Airlines Eyes Liberia for New Flight Route, Assesses RIA Facilities

The Management of the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, received a high-powered delegation from Turkish Airlines at the Roberts International Airport (RIA) in Margibi County.

The visit marks the beginning of a two-day technical assessment mission by the airline, aimed at evaluating the airport’s operational systems, safety, and security measures as part of preliminary engagements to commence flight operations in Liberia.

The Turkish Airlines team is led by Mr. Ahmet Uzunlu, Station Manager, and includes aviation specialists Mr. Muhammet Duz and Mr. Aykut Akar.

According to Mr. Uzunlu, the assessment focuses on reviewing RIA’s facilities to ensure they meet Turkish Airlines’ operational standards. The team conducted an extensive tour of the airport’s runway, departure and arrival terminals, and cargo handling areas, among other key facilities.

Founded in 1933, Turkish Airlines is the national flag carrier of Türkiye and one of the world’s largest and most reputable airlines, operating flights to more than 340 destinations in over 120 countries across six continents.

Speaking on behalf of the Liberia Airport Authority, Hon. Egon M. Kuiah, Deputy Managing Director for Operations, described the visit as part of the normal procedures required before an international carrier begins operations in any new country.

“This is a normal procedure in aviation,” Hon. Kuiah explained. “Once these formalities are concluded, Turkish Airlines is expected to resume normal operations, beginning with two weekly flights between Monrovia, Accra, and Istanbul, Türkiye.”

He further revealed that within the next three months, Turkish Airlines plans to introduce direct flights from Monrovia to Istanbul—an initiative expected to boost regional and international connectivity.

Hon. Kuiah also emphasized Liberia’s strategic geographic position, noting that the country serves as a vital link between Africa, the Americas, and Latin America, making it an ideal transit and operational hub for global airlines.

He disclosed that the Roberts International Airport is currently undergoing modernization, including the installation of fourth-generation aviation equipment designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and service delivery in compliance with international aviation standards.

The Turkish Airlines delegation’s visit represents a significant milestone in Liberia’s efforts to expand its international air transport network and strengthen economic, trade, and tourism ties with Türkiye.

Upon completion of the assessment and necessary agreements, Turkish Airlines is expected to begin twice-weekly flights to Liberia, signaling a new chapter in the nation’s aviation and economic growth.
