Rep. Joe Calls for Increased Budget Allocation for Grand Bassa University

By Archie Boan

Grand Bassa County District #3 Representative, Hon. Matthew Joe, has formally requested the House of Representatives to increase the national budget allocation for Grand Bassa University in the 2026 Draft National Budget.

Rep. Joe noted that the proposed allocation of US$871,802 for the university in the 2026 draft remains unchanged from the 2025 budget, a figure he described as “grossly insufficient” to meet the institution’s operational and developmental needs.

He compared the proposed allocation to those of other public tertiary institutions, highlighting that Lofa University receives US$2 million, Nimba University gets US$1.8 million, and Bong Technical College is allotted US$1.5 million.

The Grand Bassa lawmaker emphasized that an increased budget would allow Grand Bassa University to enhance faculty salaries, improve campus facilities, and strengthen information technology infrastructure, all essential for raising academic standards.

Following discussions during the House’s regular session, the plenary referred the request to the Committee on Ways, Means, and Finance for review and recommendations.

The committee is expected to examine the appeal and report its findings to the plenary ahead of the final approval of the 2026 National Budget.
