MOH Trains Health Workers as Liberia Prepares to Launch National Fistula Campaign

The Ministry of Health has completed a three-day refresher training for professional health workers in preparation for the official launch of the National Fistula Campaign, set to run from November 25–29, 2025, at Phebe Hospital in Bong County.

The training, conducted this week, brought together nurses, midwives, surgeons, and other frontline health professionals to strengthen their skills in identifying, managing, and treating obstetric fistula.

According to the Ministry, the exercise forms part of broader efforts to boost the quality of care that will be delivered during the upcoming nationwide campaign.

Supported by ECOWAS and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the National Fistula Campaign aims to provide free surgical treatment for women living with obstetric fistula — a debilitating childbirth injury caused by prolonged or obstructed labor.

The condition often results in continuous leakage of urine or stool, leaving many women stigmatized, isolated, and in urgent need of medical attention.

Health officials emphasized that obstetric fistula, though severe, is treatable.

They expressed optimism that the campaign will enable more women to access lifesaving and life-restoring care, particularly those in rural areas where medical services are limited.

“The Ministry of Health remains committed to strengthening maternal health services and ensuring that women and girls across Liberia receive the quality care they deserve,” the Ministry stated.

“Through this campaign, we aim to restore dignity and improve the lives of those affected by fistula.”

The National Fistula Campaign is expected to attract dozens of patients from across the country and will also serve as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of skilled birth attendance and timely obstetric care to prevent future cases.
