The Maryland Youth Association (MYA) is urging the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) to immediately recall Mr. Birr, who was recently assigned as advisor to the newly appointed LDEA County Commander in Maryland County.
In a press statement issued Wednesday, the youth group condemned the appointment, calling it “highly inappropriate, unacceptable, and disrespectful” to residents of the county.
Mr. Birr previously served as LDEA County Commander but was removed after community members and the Maryland office of the Human Rights Commission raised concerns about his conduct and leadership. The MYA says reinstating him in any capacity—direct or advisory—undermines public confidence and casts doubt on the agency’s commitment to accountability.
The organization stressed that no officer whose presence causes fear or distrust should serve within the county’s security structure. It is calling on the LDEA to withdraw Mr. Birr from all duties in Maryland County and urged the Government of Liberia, through the Office of the Superintendent, to ensure that community concerns are respected when appointing security leaders.
The MYA further encouraged the LDEA to prioritize public confidence when deploying officers across the county.
While reaffirming its willingness to collaborate with government and security institutions to maintain peace and foster development, the organization emphasized that it “will not remain silent on decisions that threaten community trust.”
