Dock Workers Union Urges President Boakai to Reject Port Autonomy Bill

The Dock Workers Union of Liberia has called on President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to reject proposed legislation that would grant autonomy to the nation’s ports.

The Union expressed strong concern over the intent and potential impact of the bill.

According to the Union, the proposed law would hinder port development rather than enhance it.

Union leadership argued that the bill is not supported by credible empirical data or technical studies.

They, among other things noted that no clear evidence has been presented to show that port autonomy would improve efficiency or growth.

The Union further stated that the legislation overlooks the high operational and maintenance costs associated with port infrastructure.

It warned that port development requires substantial and sustained government investment.

The Union also cautioned that autonomy could weaken central oversight of critical national assets. In its view, the bill threatens Liberia’s unitary system of governance.

Union officials described the proposal as a dangerous precedent for other state institutions.

They fear it could encourage fragmentation within public sector management.

The Dock Workers Union emphasized the need for careful and inclusive policy review. It urged the government to prioritize national interest over structural experimentation.

Overall, the Union concluded that the risks of the bill far outweigh any anticipated benefits.
