AfDB and Governance Commission Resume Talks to Strengthen Liberia’s Anti-Corruption Framework

The Governance Commission (GC) has renewed discussions with the African Development Bank (AfDB) aimed at reinforcing Liberia’s national integrity and anti-corruption systems.

The engagement took place on January 13 at the AfDB Country Office in Congo Town, where officials from both institutions reviewed key governance reform priorities.

These included developing a National Integrity Index, updating Liberia’s National Integrity Strategy, and preparing for a second National Integrity Barometer.

The GC delegation was led by Oversight Commissioner for the National Integrity System, Matthew B. Kollie, Jr., who met with AfDB Senior Country Economist and Officer-In-Charge, Yusuf Bob Foday.

During the meeting, both parties discussed organizing high-level policy dialogues to support legislative and administrative reforms, as well as improving evidence-based monitoring of Liberia’s integrity systems.

Commissioner Kollie described the renewed engagement as “a critical step toward strengthening Liberia’s partnerships with development institutions and ensuring data-driven approaches guide anti-corruption efforts.”

He emphasized the importance of using empirical evidence to inform policy decisions and track progress in governance reforms across the country.

AfDB representatives reaffirmed their support for Liberia’s anti-corruption initiatives, noting that collaboration with local institutions is key to sustainable governance improvements.

The meeting concluded with a joint commitment to continue consultations on the technical and financial arrangements needed to implement the planned initiatives.

Both sides highlighted the role of these reforms in enhancing transparency, accountability, and public trust in Liberia’s governance structures.

The renewed talks are expected to pave the way for stronger collaboration between Liberia and international development partners on integrity and anti-corruption measures.

Commissioner Kollie further stated, “By working closely with partners like the AfDB, we can strengthen the institutional framework needed to prevent corruption and promote ethical governance throughout Liberia.”

The Governance Commission and AfDB agreed to maintain ongoing engagement to ensure timely implementation of these initiatives, reinforcing Liberia’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
