The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) has reaffirmed Liberia’s standing as the world’s leading shipping registry during a high-level briefing with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. at the Executive Mansion on Monday.
Commissioner Lighe reported that as of November 1, 2025, the Liberian Registry had reached nearly 300 million gross tons (GT), reflecting a 3.2 percent growth over the same period in 2024.
He added that Liberia has expanded its advantage over its nearest competitor by almost 45 million gross tons, further strengthening its dominance in international shipping.
LiMA Commissioner also informed President Boakai that Liberia was re-elected to Category “A” of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, the organization’s highest decision-making body.
According to Cllr. Lighe, Liberia’s fleet continues to be recognized globally for its safety standards, environmental compliance, and overall performance.
The LiMA CEO emphasized that Liberia remains on the IMO White List, underscoring the country’s consistent adherence to international maritime safety and environmental regulations.
He, however, assured the President of the Authority’s unwavering commitment to preserving and advancing Liberia’s leadership role in global maritime affairs.
Commissioner Lighe further expressed gratitude to President Boakai for his administration’s sustained support to the Liberia Maritime Authority and the maritime sector at large.
In response, President Boakai praised LiMA for its strong performance and for safeguarding the credibility and integrity of Liberia’s maritime program.
The Liberian leader encouraged the Authority to remain focused on serving the national interest while fully institutionalizing international best practices.
The delegation also included Cllr. Margaret Ansumana, Senior Deputy Commissioner for Maritime Affairs; Mr. Emmanuel Reeves, Senior Deputy Commissioner for Financial Affairs; and Adam Cohen and Elan Cohen, Co-Chairs of the Liberia International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR).
By early 2025, Liberia’s shipping registry managed over 286 million gross tons, accounting for approximately 17 percent of the global shipping market.
By the final quarter of the year, the fleet expanded close to 300 million gross tons, representing one of the strongest annual growth rates among the world’s major international shipping registries.
