The Government of Liberia has signed a major infrastructure contract valued at JPY 2.45 billion (approximately US$16 million) for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Freeport–Gabriel Tucker Bridge urban arterial corridor, a critical roadway connecting the Freeport of Monrovia to central parts of the capital.
The agreement was signed on Friday, March 6, 2026, in Tokyo by Liberia’s Deputy Minister for technical services at the ministry of public works, Prince Tambah following a week of engagements with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Eight-Japan Engineering Consultants Inc. (EJEC).
The contract was awarded to Dai Nippon Construction, which will undertake the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the 1.9-kilometer dual carriageway corridor leading to the Gabriel Tucker Bridge.
The project is fully financed through a 100 percent grant from the Government and people of Japan, reflecting the growing partnership between Liberia and Japan in the area of infrastructure development.
According to Deputy Minister Tambah, the contractor is expected to mobilize in May 2026, with civil works scheduled to commence in July 2026. The project has an estimated implementation period of 26 months.
The rehabilitation will significantly improve urban mobility and traffic flow, while also addressing the persistent flooding challenges that have long affected the corridor, particularly during the rainy season. The roadway serves as a vital link between the Freeport of Monrovia and major commercial areas of the city.
He expressed appreciation to the Government of Japan for its continued support, highlighting the role of diplomatic and technical partners in bringing the project to fruition.
Minister Tambah lauded Foreign Minister, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, for strengthening Liberia–Japan relations.
