CDC Acarous Gray says ‘Boakai Can Lead NEC Himself, UP Will Still Lose Election’

Former Montserrado County District # 8 Representative Acarous Moses Gray has reacted strongly to reports that Davidetta Browne Lansanah, Chairperson of the National Elections Commission of Liberia, plans to step down from her position.

Posting on his official Facebook page Thursday, Gray said that even if President Joseph Boakai were to appoint himself as chairman of the electoral body, the ruling Unity Party would still suffer a decisive electoral defeat.

“President Joseph Boakai can even appoint himself as National Election Commission Chairman — he and the Unity Party will still be massively flogged without a runoff election. It’s a matter of time for the Liberian people to act effectively,” Gray said.

Gray currently serves as an executive member of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change, the political party led by former Liberian President George Weah.

Meanwhile, Madan Lansanah announced that she will officially resign as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission on Sunday, March 15, 2026. Her resignation is expected to create a vacancy that will allow President Boakai to appoint a new head of the commission in accordance with Liberian law.

The development comes at a time of heightened political tension, with opposition figures increasingly criticizing the government over governance and electoral matters.

Political observers say the appointment of a new NEC chairperson will be closely watched by stakeholders to ensure the independence and credibility of Liberia’s electoral process.
