No More Double Dipping: Bill Passed

By Archie Boan

The 55th House of Representatives of Liberia has passed a landmark bill prohibiting active government officials from serving on the boards or management of public institutions.

The legislation, championed by Maryland County District #2 Representative, Anthony F. Williams, seeks to end what many have long criticized as “double dipping”, a practice where public officials hold multiple positions and receive overlapping benefits within government structures.

The newly passed Act establishes a clear legal framework that bars sitting officials from occupying board roles in public institutions, a move lawmakers say will eliminate conflicts of interest and strengthen accountability across state entities.

Rep. Williams, in pushing the bill, argued that public trust in government has been eroded by blurred lines between oversight and management.

He emphasized that officials entrusted with national responsibilities should not simultaneously sit on boards where they may influence decisions for personal or political gain.

“This is about restoring credibility and ensuring that public institutions serve the people, not individual interests,” Williams noted during earlier deliberations.

Beyond addressing conflict of interest, the Act also targets the issue of multiple compensations, ensuring that no official benefits from duplicate government paychecks for similar roles. Lawmakers believe this will promote fairness and improve the efficient use of limited national resources.

The bill further aims to open up opportunities for qualified professionals outside government encouraging broader participation in the governance of public institutions while strengthening independent oversight mechanisms.

Following its passage by the House, the legislation has been forwarded to the Liberian Senate for concurrence. If approved, it is expected to mark a significant shift in how public institutions are managed in Liberia.
