Former Land & Mines Minister Warns of Rising Threat from Guinea

Monrovia, Liberia – Former Land, Mines & Energy Minister Wilmot Paye has raised alarm over what he describes as the “unprovoked aggression” of neighboring Guinea, warning that Liberia could face serious risks if it continues a policy of neutrality in the shifting geopolitical landscape.

In a recent opinion piece, Paye said Guinea has now aligned itself with Russia, placing Liberia in a position where remaining “neutral” or adhering strictly to pan-African ideals could endanger the country’s sovereignty.

“There is no need for Liberia to play victim. With Guinea now firmly in Russia’s sphere of influence, Liberia cannot remain neutral to the detriment of its own eternal survival,” Paye wrote.

He criticized the concept of “African Unity” as largely aspirational, emphasizing that the continent comprises 54 independent nations, each pursuing its own interests. He argued that pretending neutrality amid growing international rivalries is “suicidal” and leaves Liberia vulnerable.

Paye urged the Liberian government to align itself with long-standing allies, specifically advocating participation in the US-brokered Board of Peace. He stressed that Liberia’s historical ties and sacrifices alongside the United States make such an alliance critical in countering external threats.

“The growing aggression from Guinea is a stark reminder that Liberia’s destiny is inextricably linked to that of the United States of America,” he wrote.

Paye concluded that Guinea’s recent actions are only the beginning of challenges that Liberia must confront in the 21st century, particularly as Russia seeks to expand its influence across Africa.
