Why did Liberian football delegation travel without uniforms to China?

By Danesius Marteh

Several photos have emerged about a 19-man Liberian football delegation to China without uniforms or properly attired in the national colors.

From departure at the Roberts international airport on 27 April on aboard an Ethiopian Airlines to arrival in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, members of the delegation have been wearing just anything even up to arrival in China on 28 April.

Some are wearing replica shirts of Manchester United and Grand Bassa County since they were selected from the 2025/2026 National County Sports Meet.

Footage from a tour of historical and cultural sites, an information and technology center, sporting facilities and film production sites, among others, in Guizhou Province on 29 April and Guizhou Institute of Technology on 30 April showed the delegation in disorganized mixture of different styles of clothes.

What is troubling is Sports Minister Cornelia Wonkerleh Kruah (attorney-at-law) has an exclusive media team of consummate professionals knowledgeable about media and sports branding while Deputy Sports Minister Andy Quamie is a veteran sports administrator, who has served as Caf and Fifa match commissioner and general coordinator.

So why did the delegation leave in such a sloppy manner?

They are in China to participate in the 2026 Village Super League, also known as Cun Chao—a grassroots football initiative that originated in Rongjiang County, Guizhou Province, in southwest China.

The initiative is fully sponsored by the Chinese Embassy in Liberia through the effort of the government.

The delegation is headed by Amos Kollie of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and includes Nimba County head coach Mamadee Sheriff, Grand Cape Mount County head coach Sami Kamara and Okay FM sports editor Sylvester Tamba.

Players per county: Clarence Mehn of Nimba, Godtime Joe of Bong, Wahee Morgan of Montserrado, Gray Elliot of Maryland, Mohammed Kamara of Grand Cape Mount, Jerome Wleh of Sinoe, Dennis Gbagbaku of Lofa, Wradi Wollor of Grand Kru, Derrick Harris of River Gee, Solomon Randall of Bomi, Jackson Horace of Margibi, Quincy Zeon of Grand Gedeh, Samuel Brown of River Cess, Enoch Cheeks of Grand Bassa and Henry Jah of Gbarpolu.

The delegation returns home on 4 May.
