Ambulance Breakdown Delays Emergency Care for Pregnant Woman in Grand Kru

By Patrick Teah Jr.

Grand Kru County — Concerns over emergency healthcare services in Grand Kru County have deepened after an ambulance transporting a pregnant woman to the Grand Kru County Referral Hospital reportedly broke down in the Topoh Community, delaying urgent medical care for the patient.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred on Friday, May 9, 2026, while the ambulance was carrying the woman to the county referral hospital for treatment. The vehicle reportedly developed mechanical problems along the route, leaving the patient stranded for an extended period as community members and health workers sought alternative transportation.

Residents who gathered at the scene described the situation as both alarming and dangerous, noting that delays in emergency response could have serious consequences for pregnant women and other critically ill patients.
“This is something that could cost lives,” one resident said. “Pregnant women and other critical patients should not be suffering because an ambulance is not functioning properly.”

The incident has renewed public frustration over the condition of the county’s healthcare system, particularly concerns surrounding the availability and maintenance of emergency response vehicles.

Several citizens called on the national government and health authorities to urgently improve support to the county’s health sector by ensuring that ambulances assigned to rural counties are properly maintained and operational.

Community members warned that repeated failures involving emergency vehicles could place vulnerable patients at greater risk, especially in remote areas where access to healthcare facilities remains difficult.
Grand Kru County, like many rural counties across Liberia, continues to face significant transportation and healthcare delivery challenges, particularly during medical emergencies where timely intervention is essential.

As of the time of publication, county health authorities had not publicly commented on the incident or disclosed the condition of the patient.
