Cracks have begun to show within the defense team as the investigation into alleged jury tampering continues behind closed doors.
What was expected to be a united legal front has instead turned into a visible disagreement among three senior lawyers, Cllr. Arthur T. Johnson, Cllr. Noris Tweah, and Cllr. M. Wilkin Wright, over whether the court even has the authority to conduct the ongoing inquiry.
During parts of the proceedings, Cllr. Johnson openly questioned the judge’s jurisdiction, arguing that the court does not have the legal power to preside over the investigation.
According to Cllr. Johnson, the matter should follow a different legal path and not e handled in its current form.
But Cllr. Wright, a former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia, strongly disagreed.
“I hate stupid people. If a lawyer commits a crime, he or she must be investigated. And, if found guilty, he or she must go to jail. This is just an act of showing off. If this continues, I wouldn’t be a part,” Cllr. Wright spoke with frustration.
In a moment that revealed just how tense the situation has become, Wright expressed frustration over the debate.
The sharp difference in views has created an uneasy atmosphere among members of the defense team, with many lawyers part letigants noting that the disagreement could affect their overall strategy as the case unfolds.
The investigation itself is being conducted privately, with only individuals directly connected to the matter allowed inside. Jurors and court officers have reportedly been questioned as part of the inquiry. So far, no formal charges have been announced.
As the probe continues, attention is not only on the allegations of jury tampering but also on the growing tension within the defense camp, a development that could have significant implications in the days ahead.
