LMDC Publishes First-Ever National Registry of Licensed Doctors and Health Facilities in Liberia

The Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) has released its official national register of licensed medical doctors and healthcare facilities, marking what it describes as a major step toward strengthening transparency and accountability in the country’s health sector.

The Council confirmed that 531 medical doctors and 489 healthcare facilities are currently licensed and active to provide medical services across Liberia.

The published registry includes both local and foreign specialist practitioners who have met regulatory requirements and received authorization to practice in the country.

According to the LMDC, the publication provides essential details such as names, license numbers, professional status, and expiration dates of practitioners and institutions.

The initiative, the Council says, is intended to help patients and families independently verify the legitimacy of healthcare providers before receiving medical care.

“This initiative promotes transparency, accountability, and patient safety within Liberia’s healthcare system,” the Council stated.

The LMDC further urged the public to routinely confirm the licensing status of doctors and health facilities, noting that doing so will help citizens access qualified care while also strengthening accountability in cases of alleged medical malpractice.

“As part of this effort, individuals and families are encouraged to request and verify the professional licensing status of healthcare workers and facilities before receiving medical services. Doing so ensures that patients are treated by duly licensed professionals,” the Council emphasized.

The Council disclosed that this is the first publication of its kind and will be updated every three months to reflect changes in licensing status, including the removal of practitioners or institutions that fail to comply with regulatory requirements.

LMDC also reminded all practitioners and healthcare facility owners that operational licenses are valid for 12 months and must be renewed before expiration to ensure uninterrupted authorization to practice.

Effective July 15, 2026, the Council announced that late renewal or registration of operational licenses and certificates will attract a penalty fee of 50 percent of the standard registration cost.

“The Liberia Medical and Dental Council remains committed to strengthening professional regulation, protecting public health, and ensuring the delivery of safe, ethical, and quality healthcare services throughout the country,” the statement concluded.

The announcement was signed by Amanda M. Yarsiah, Public Relations Officer of the LMDC, and approved by LMDC management.
