MONROVIA- The National Disaster Management Agency of Liberia has cautioned that Liberia faces a high risk of severe flooding this rainy season after heavy downpours damaged more than 1,000 plus homes and displaced vulnerable residents across several communities.
Speaking Tuesday at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, the Executive Director of the NDMA, Hon. Ansu Dulleh said, field assessments and surveys confirm widespread flash floods and property destruction, mostly in areas around Monrovia.
Among those affected were homes belongings to persons with disabilities.
Hon. Dulleh urged Liberians to stop building in drainage channels and waterways so as to keep surroundings clean to allow free water flow.
The Executive Director encouraged residents to promptly report flood incidents to the Agency in various communities to help tackle the situation sooner.�
The agency is working with the Ministries of Local Government, Public Works, and Health, LWSC, LFS, AFL, LNP, the Liberia National Red Cross, UN agencies, the World Bank, IMF, and other development partners to strengthen response efforts.
NDMA called on all citizens to reduce flood risk by clearing drains, avoiding improper waste disposal, complying with environmental regulations, and following public safety guidance.
