Can Liberia Feed Itself? Farmer Dukuly Khalil Champions Agricultural Self-Reliance

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Liberian Farmer and agricultural advocate Abraham V.M. Dukuly, popularly known as Dukuly Khalil, is calling for greater investment in local agriculture, arguing that Liberia has the potential to feed itself if its fertile land is fully utilized.

In a public statement, Dukuly highlighted the country’s vast agricultural potential, noting that a single seed can produce an abundance of fruits and vegetables. He questioned why hunger continues to affect many communities despite the availability of arable land across Liberia and other parts of Africa.

Dukuly challenged Liberians to reduce their dependence on imported produce by embracing and increasing investment in vegetable production.

“If we as Liberians can’t grow our own vegetables that can serve us, then who should we depend on? Is it China, America, or Guinea?” he asked, stressing the need for national self-sufficiency in food production.

He urged both the government and private citizens to prioritize agriculture as a means of improving food security, creating jobs, and strengthening the country’s economy.

Through his farming initiative, “Grow with Dukuly,” the young farmer continues to promote the cultivation of quality vegetables while encouraging more Liberians, especially young people, to view agriculture as a viable and profitable venture.

His message comes amid growing national discussions on food security and the importance of increasing domestic agricultural production to reduce reliance on imported food.
