GBESEE TOWN, Rivercess County – The Sayuoh Public School in Gbesee Town has recorded a significant decline in student retention during the 2025/2026 academic year, with 51 pupils dropping out before the end of the school year.
Speaking at the school’s 54th Closing Program, Acting Principal Augustine Zondo disclosed that the school enrolled 201 pupils at the start of the academic year, but only 150 successfully completed the year.
According to Mr. Zondo, the 51 pupils who dropped out include some students who registered but never reported to school at the beginning of the academic year for reasons known only to themselves.
He further explained that the school initially enrolled 83 female and 118 male students, but the number declined significantly by the close of the academic year.
Mr. Zondo described the dropout rate as alarming and expressed concern over its impact on education in the community.
He called on parents and guardians to prioritize their children’s education by ensuring they pay school activities fees on time, noting that the inability of some parents to meet these obligations contributed to some pupils leaving school before completing the academic year.
The Acting Principal appealed to community leaders, parents, and education stakeholders to work together to reduce the growing dropout rate and improve school attendance in the community.
