Mrs. Joana Domingo Joekai, wife of Civil Service Agency (CSA) Director General Dr. Josiah F. Joekai Jr., has resigned as Director of Nursing Services at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFKMC), citing what she described as prolonged administrative actions that left her unable to continue serving effectively.
In her resignation letter, Mrs. Joekai said her decision, which takes effect on August 25, 2026, followed a series of events after allegations that she announced confirmed Ebola-positive cases in Liberia during an Ebola preparedness training.
She said she fully cooperated with an investigation by the Liberia National Police, which found no evidence of wrongdoing. However, despite submitting the official police clearance and
requesting reinstatement, she said she was not returned to her position and was later informed of a secondment that she formally challenged.
Mrs. Joekai said those circumstances ultimately compelled her to resign.
Her departure ends nearly two years as Director of Nursing Services, during which she led nursing services across JFK Medical Center, E.S. Grant Mental Health Hospital and the Maternity Hospital.
She is credited with implementing reforms aimed at strengthening nursing leadership, improving professional standards, enhancing workforce accountability and promoting quality patient care.
Despite her resignation, Mrs. Joekai emphasized that she remains committed to Liberia and stressed that her decision should not be interpreted as a loss of confidence in the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
She reaffirmed her support for the government’s reform agenda and expressed appreciation for the President’s confidence in her husband, Dr. Josiah F. Joekai Jr., who serves as Director General of the Civil Service Agency.
She concluded by thanking healthcare workers, patients and colleagues for the opportunity to serve and wished JFK Medical Center continued success in delivering quality healthcare services to Liberians.
