Senator Numene T.H. Bartekwa, Sr., Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the University of Liberia, has challenged Liberian students studying in India to pursue academic excellence, uphold discipline, and prepare to use their knowledge to drive Liberia’s development.
Speaking Monday during Liberia’s 179th Independence Anniversary celebration at Sharda University in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, Senator Bartekwa reminded students that they are ambassadors of Liberia whose conduct and achievements shape the country’s image abroad.
Addressing officials of Sharda University, Liberian students, representatives of the University of Liberia, and invited guests, the Grand Kru County Senator said education remains one of the most powerful tools for national transformation and urged students to remain committed to their studies while respecting India’s laws and cultural values.
“The education you are receiving represents an investment in Liberia’s future. Your success abroad must become part of Liberia’s success at home,” Bartekwa declared.
The Senator conveyed greetings from President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Senate President Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, and University of Liberia President Dr. Layli Maparyen, while thanking Sharda University and the Liberian student community for organizing the Independence Day celebration.
Reflecting on Liberia’s 179-year journey since gaining independence on July 26, 1847, Bartekwa said the nation’s history has been defined by resilience, courage, and perseverance despite difficult periods. He urged Liberians everywhere to recommit themselves to peace, democracy, justice, national unity, and sustainable development.
He stressed that patriotism extends beyond Liberia’s borders, noting that every Liberian abroad carries the responsibility of protecting the country’s reputation on the international stage.
As Chairperson of the University of Liberia’s Board of Trustees, Bartekwa reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to advancing academic excellence, research, innovation, ethical leadership, and producing graduates capable of addressing national and global challenges.
He also praised the longstanding partnership between Liberia and India, highlighting cooperation in higher education, scholarships, healthcare, technical training, commerce, and cultural exchanges.
According to him, the growing number of Liberian students studying in India reflects the country’s significant contribution to Liberia’s human capacity development.
Bartekwa commended Sharda University for providing an environment that enables Liberian students to excel academically and personally, describing the institution as an important partner in strengthening international educational cooperation.
He further called on Liberians to remain committed to accountability, transparency, the rule of law, and investment in education, emphasizing that these principles are critical to building a prosperous and inclusive nation.
The Independence Day celebration formed part of Senator Bartekwa’s official visit to India, where he is expected to hold discussions with the leadership of Sharda University aimed at expanding cooperation with the University of Liberia in academic exchanges, faculty development, research collaboration, and other educational partnerships.
