The Center for Advocacy and Civic Engagement (CFAC) has commended National Elections Commission (NEC) Chairperson Jonathan K. Weedor and the Board of Commissioners for what it described as “visionary leadership” and significant institutional reforms that have strengthened Liberia’s electoral management body.
In a statement issued Monday, CFAC said the NEC has made remarkable progress under Weedor’s leadership, citing improvements in professionalism, accountability, transparency, and strategic direction within the Commission.
The statement, signed by CFAC Executive Director Prince S.D. Marley, Sr., said the current NEC leadership has demonstrated a strong commitment to institutional governance, stakeholder engagement, and restoring public confidence in the country’s electoral system.
“Strong democratic institutions are built on credible leadership, integrity, accountability, and public trust. We believe the current leadership of the National Elections Commission of Liberia has demonstrated a clear commitment to these principles and is taking meaningful steps to strengthen the Commission’s institutional capacity and credibility,” Marley said.
According to CFAC, the Commission has advanced key reforms by strengthening internal administrative systems, promoting dialogue with political parties and electoral stakeholders, investing in staff capacity development, and expanding collaboration with national and international partners.
The organization said these initiatives demonstrate a leadership focused on long-term institutional development rather than short-term political gains.
CFAC also praised the NEC’s efforts to improve transparency and inclusiveness through regular consultations with stakeholders, public engagement, and enhanced communication on electoral matters, noting that such measures are critical to building public trust in Liberia’s democratic processes.
While welcoming the progress made, the organization urged the NEC leadership to sustain the reforms by maintaining impartiality, professionalism, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law.
CFAC further called on political parties, civil society organizations, development partners, the media, and citizens to support ongoing institutional reforms aimed at ensuring peaceful, credible, and transparent elections.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to independently monitor Liberia’s democratic institutions while recognizing exemplary public service wherever it is demonstrated, regardless of political affiliation.
