MONROVIA, Liberia — August 12, 2026: The Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) have begun a three-day Health Sector Budget Preparation Meeting aimed at ensuring that the country’s health priorities are reflected in the national budget and aligned with the government’s Arrest Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID).
The meeting, which runs from August 12 to 14 at the Ministry of Health, brings together senior officials and representatives from key institutions across Liberia’s health sector.
Participants include representatives from the MOH, MFDP, National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), Liberia Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA), Liberia Medicines and Health Products Agency (LMDA), John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Phebe Hospital, Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Liberia National Medical Board, among others.
Opening the meeting, Health Minister Dr. Louise M. Kpoto called on technical officials to develop a focused, realistic and evidence-based health-sector agenda that addresses the priority needs of Liberians while supporting the government’s broader development objectives.
“We must present a realistic and evidence-based document that is void of duplication. Its timeline must be clear. We should not initiate projects that we know the funds are not available for,” Dr. Kpoto said.
She emphasized the need to prioritize programs and projects that can be realistically financed and implemented, while avoiding duplication among institutions.
Representing the MFDP, Jimmy W. C. Bokay, Director for Regional and Sectoral Planning, said the engagement was designed to promote a coordinated and participatory approach to budget preparation.
Bokay said the process would help ensure that the priorities of health-sector institutions are properly incorporated into the government’s broader fiscal planning framework.
“From our data, the health sector is doing well, and we are grateful for the coordination that has yielded this result,” he said.
The budget preparation exercise comes as the government seeks to strengthen Liberia’s health system, improve service delivery and ensure that limited public resources are directed toward programs and interventions critical to the health and well-being of the population.
The three-day meeting is expected to help health-sector institutions refine their priorities and develop a coordinated budget framework for the upcoming national budget.
