Monrovia, Liberia Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe has vowed to vote against the confirmation of former Justice Minister and Attorney General Cllr. Oswald Tweh, citing his alleged poor performance in office and contribution to the politicization of Liberia’s justice system.
Senator Snowe, in a Facebook post, said Cllr. Tweh’s record as Justice Minister raises serious concerns about his suitability for a leadership position within the Armed Forces of Liberia.
According to Senator Snowe, Tweh failed to consistently serve as the government’s principal legal adviser by providing President Joseph Nyumah Boakai and his administration with prudent, independent, and objective legal counsel.
He said the former Justice Minister’s tenure was too often influenced by political considerations, which, in his view, undermined the independence and credibility of the justice system.
“The military is one of our most sensitive national institutions and must remain professional, disciplined, apolitical, and firmly committed to its constitutional responsibilities,” Senator Snowe stated.
He warned that introducing political considerations into the military could undermine its professionalism, cohesion, and institutional integrity, with potentially serious consequences for Liberia’s national security.
Senator Snowe emphasized that his opposition to Tweh’s potential nomination is not personal, but rather based on his assessment of the former minister’s public record and his responsibility as a senator to protect the integrity of Liberia’s national institutions.
“My position is therefore not personal; it is based on my assessment of his record in public office and my responsibility as a Senator to protect the integrity of our national institutions,” he said.
The senator further stated that he does not believe Cllr. Tweh’s record as Minister of Justice inspires the confidence necessary to serve in a leadership role involving the Armed Forces of Liberia.
“Accordingly, if his nomination comes before the Senate for confirmation, I will vote against his confirmation,” Senator Snowe declared.
The statement comes amid discussions surrounding leadership and appointments within Liberia’s national security institutions.
