CHICAGO: U.S. — Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has deported Amos Sheik Massaquoi, 55, a former Liberian combatant accused of involvement in serious human rights violations during Liberia’s civil wars.
According to ICE, Massaquoi was removed to Liberia on August 11, 2026, following immigration enforcement proceedings.
The agency said Massaquoi is believed to have ordered and participated in extrajudicial killings, torture, arbitrary arrests and detentions, forced labor and the recruitment of child soldiers during Liberia’s civil wars between 1989 and 2003.
ICE also alleged that Massaquoi served as chief bodyguard to Maj. Gen. Daniel Chea, described by the agency as a former leader of Charles Taylor’s National Patriotic Front of Liberia.
The agency further stated that Massaquoi received specialized military training at a military academy in China in 2004.
ICE Chicago Field Office Director Frank Padula said the agency would pursue individuals accused of committing human rights abuses abroad and remove them from the United States.
The allegations were presented by ICE as part of its justification for Massaquoi’s removal.
