Women Breaking Barriers In The Field of Medicine: Meet New Liberian Specialist Doctors

Liberian women in medicine are breaking bariers. They are fast transitioning from general practitioners to specialist doctors. Verity New has profiled five (5) of them who graduated yesterday, September 18, 2026, in specialized medical fields from the LIberia College of Physicians and Surgeons (LCPS).

The prevailing health situation in Liberia requires more trained and equipped specialist doctors. The Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) revealed on June 30, 2026 that there are just 531 licensed medical doctors across 282 health facilities in Liberia. This means that doctor-to-patient ratio stands at one doctor to every 10,119 patients. This gap is huge, but women are stepping forward to fill it. More than that, about 80% of the 531 medical doctors are general practitioners (GPs).

Today, this newspaper is introducting five (5) new specialist doctors, which suggests that Liberian women are breaking barriers and taking front roles in medicine:

2) Dr. Famah Sumo-Giddings
