MONROVIA, Liberia — The Foundation for Human Rights Defense International (FOHRD) says it is preparing to file a lawsuit against Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman over what the organization alleges is the failure to properly handle several cases under his leadership.
FOHRD Executive Director Torbor Tee Wonokay Fangalo said the organization intends to take legal action over cases he claims were either not properly resolved or compromised, including the Melvin Earley case and the ongoing investigation into the seizure of drugs.
“Today, the same Gregory Coleman failed to resolve a lot of cases, including the Melvin Earley case. He compromised them,” Fangalo alleged.
He said FOHRD is seeking legal action against Coleman in connection with what the organization describes as attempts to cover up or mishandle several cases.
Fangalo also called on Coleman to recuse himself from the ongoing drug investigation, arguing that his continued involvement could raise concerns about the handling of the case.
“The right thing to do at this time is for IG Gregory Coleman to recuse himself,” Fangalo said.
He described the drug situation as a serious concern for Liberia and said it is affecting the country’s development.
Fangalo further called on the ruling Unity Party to distance itself from what he described as actions or individuals that could damage the party’s public standing, including Coleman.
FOHRD’s allegations have not been established in court, and Coleman and the Liberia National Police have not been quoted in the statement provided as responding to the claims.
The reported lawsuit and any related court proceedings are expected to provide an opportunity for the allegations to be examined through the legal process.
