Monrovia, Liberia — The Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) has declined to participate in the current process to establish a proposed opposition coalition, citing differences over the coalition’s draft communique and its vision for national reform.
In a statement issued September 24, 2026, the CMC said its National Executive Committee, National Advisory Council and Diaspora Leadership reviewed the draft communique and concluded that it does not sufficiently reflect the objectives for which the party was established.
The party said it supports opposition cooperation but argued that any coalition should first agree on a clear program for constitutional reform, accountable governance, institutional independence, economic opportunity and transparent leadership.
CMC Political Leader Musa Hassan Bility said the party was founded to provide Liberia with a “Third Lane” and would not abandon that objective by joining an arrangement that lacks a binding reform agenda.
The CMC said its decision was not a personal criticism of former President George Manneh Weah or other political leaders involved in the process.
The party said it remains open to cooperation on issues including electoral integrity, the rule of law and public accountability, while continuing consultations toward what it described as a broad national “third lane.”
