The Janapita Bridge along the Ganta Highway has developed a deep hole in the middle of the roadway and is showing signs of structural damage, including possible separation at sections of the bridge.
The deteriorating condition of the Janapita Bridge has raised serious safety concerns along the Ganta Highway, following two separate road accidents reportedly linked to a deep hole that has developed in the middle of the bridge.
The accidents involved a truck and a taxi, both of which reportedly lost control after hitting the damaged portion of the roadway and somersaulted several times before landing in the nearby bush.
The truck, bearing plate number H06495, was reportedly transporting drinks and other goods to Maryland County, while the taxi was carrying goods toward Monrovia.
According to reports, both vehicles somersaulted approximately three times after encountering the deep hole on the bridge.
No deaths have so far been reported from the incidents, although individuals involved in the accidents are reportedly receiving medical treatment.
The condition of the bridge has raised concerns among motorists and residents, as portions of the structure are reportedly showing signs of deterioration, including possible separation around some sections and joints.
The Janapita Bridge serves as an important transportation link between Bong and Nimba Counties, carrying motorists, commercial vehicles and traders along the Ganta Highway.
Janapita also hosts a major market every Monday, attracting traders and residents from various parts of Bong County and surrounding areas, making the bridge particularly important to local commerce and transportation.
The bridge was reportedly constructed in the 1970s under a World Bank-funded project and has since served as a major route for the movement of people and goods.
Meanwhile, authorities have taken an initial safety measure to prevent further accidents.
The Operations Officer of the Traffic Division of the Liberia National Police Bong County Detachment, Inspector Z. William Nyanamah, led a team of traffic officers to the location Sunday morning and barricaded the damaged portion of the bridge.
Motorists using the Ganta Highway are being urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed and remain alert when approaching the Janapita Bridge.
The current condition of the bridge has also renewed calls for urgent assessment and repairs to prevent additional accidents and ensure the safety of motorists and passengers using the major highway.
